The Alchemy Web Application

The Alchemy web application is a fully functional version of Alchemy that can be run on most devices that can access a web browser. This would include most computers, tablets, and mobile systems.

The Alchemy web experience can be accessed by any players through the following instructions:

  1. Navigate to app.alchemyrpg.com.

  2. Sign in to Alchemy using the Username and Password credentials of your account.

The Alchemy Desktop Application

Alchemy’s desktop application is considered to be the ultimate experience when playing games through the platform. When using Alchemy's desktop application instead of a web browser, additional functionality is supported.

  • D&D Beyond Import. Alchemy Unlimited subscribers can import a character from D&D Beyond. See Importing a Character for additional information.

  • Streamlined Downloads. When exporting characters or NPCs from Alchemy in the browser, you may be prompted to save these files before they are downloaded to your device. When using the Alchemy desktop app, these exports will automatically be delivered to your device's Downloads folder.

Windows

Download the latest Windows app here.

The Windows app will automatically keep itself up to date when it is closed and relaunched. You may also occasionally see an Action Center notification indicating that a new version is available.

macOS

Download the latest macOS app here.

The macOS app will automatically keep itself up to date when it is closed and relaunched. You may also occasionally see a Notification Center notification indicating that a new update is available.

Linux

The Linux app can be downloaded in AppImage (preferred, x86_64, arm64), Deb (amd64, arm64), and Tarball (x64, arm64) package formats.

AppImage is the preferred package because it will receive automatic binary updates when we release changes to the desktop app itself. For Deb and Tarball packages, you will be responsible for downloading the latest binary whenever we update the desktop binaries, which happens a couple times per month. These updates are typically not to the functionality of Alchemy, which happen automatically within the desktop app; rather they are to the underlying support libraries like Chromium.

System Requirements

This section lists the recommended system configurations to ensure optimal performance while using Alchemy.

Software Requirements

Currently, The Alchemy desktop app is designed to run on devices using Windows, macOS, or Linux operating systems.

  • Windows 7 or higher

  • Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard or higher

The Alchemy web app is designed to work on most internet browsers (examples listed below). As a best practice, we recommend always staying updated on one of the last two major versions of your web browser when accessing Alchemy and making sure your browser's hardware acceleration setting is enabled.

  • Google Chrome

  • Microsoft Edge

  • Brave

  • Opera

Alchemy does work in a Safari browser, but due to Safari not supporting .webm videos with transparency, motion overlays in game may not show as transparent against a scene's background image. Similar issues are known to exist in Mozilla Firefox as well.

Hardware Requirements

Alchemy is designed to run on a PC using the operating systems listed above.

Alchemy is able to run in a web browser on other types of devices such as tablets and mobile devices; though these experiences are not expected to be optimized just yet.

For the best experience, Alchemy is designed to run on a screen that has a minimum resolution of 1366x768 (a 16:9 aspect ratio).

Network Requirements

Alchemy is a platform that requires an internet connection to use, as events are received and sent in real time. For the most optimal experience, we recommend a strong and stable network connection when logged into Alchemy. To ensure your connection is strong, you can run a speed test on your device such as the ones offered by Ookla or Google.

We cannot provide specific instructions for troubleshooting your network connection, but here are some best practices you can follow to help establish a strong connection to your home network.

  • Restart your router. Sometimes, restarting your router can help improve your internet speed. Simply unplug your router for about 30 seconds, and then plug it back in.

  • Check for other devices. Ensure that no other device is using your internet connection, especially if they are streaming videos or downloading large files as this can impact the bandwidth your device is able to use.

  • Clear your browser cache. Your browser cache stores a lot of temporary data, which can slow down your internet speed. When using Alchemy in a web browser, clearing your cache can help ensure that your browser is running at optimal speed.

  • Use a wired connection. If you're using Wi-Fi, switch to a wired connection to help improve your internet speed.

  • Upgrade your router. If you have an old or outdated router, it may be time to upgrade to a newer model. A new router can help improve your internet speed and overall connectivity.

  • Contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP). If you have tried all the above steps and still experience slow internet speeds, contact your ISP to report the issue. They may be able to troubleshoot the issue or send a technician to your location to resolve the issue.
