Desktop App Release Channels

What are release channels and how to I switch to the Beta Channel?

Updated today

The Alchemy desktop app ships on two release channels:

  • Stable: the default channel. Polished, thoroughly tested releases.

  • Beta: early access to upcoming features and fixes. Less stable and may contain bugs.

Switching channels changes which updates the app downloads from now on. The next time an update is available (or the next time you select "Check for Updates..."), the app will pull from your selected channel.

Heads up: The Beta channel is marked "Danger Zone" in the menu for a reason. Expect rough edges, and please report anything that looks broken.

macOS

  1. Open Alchemy.app.

  2. In the menu bar at the top of the screen, click Alchemy.

  3. Choose Beta Channel (Danger Zone).

  4. The app will immediately check for updates on the Beta channel. If a beta build is available, you'll be prompted to install it.

To go back to the stable channel, repeat the steps above and choose Stable Channel instead.

Windows

  1. Open Alchemy.exe.

  2. In the menu bar at the top of the window, click File.

  3. Choose Beta Channel (Danger Zone).

  4. The app will immediately check for updates on the Beta channel. If a beta build is available, you'll be prompted to install it.

To go back to the stable channel, open the File menu again and choose Stable Channel.

Can't see the menu bar? Press the Alt key to reveal it.

Linux

  1. Open Alchemy.AppImage.

Verifying your current channel

The selected channel is indicated by a radio dot next to either Stable Channel or Beta Channel (Danger Zone) in the same menu. You can also select Check for Updates... β€” when no update is available, the dialog will tell you whether you're on the latest stable or beta version.

Troubleshooting

  • Nothing happens after switching. If no newer build exists on the channel you picked, the app stays on its current version until the next release lands. Select Check for Updates... any time to re-check.

  • I want to roll back to a stable build immediately. Switch back to the Stable channel and wait for an update notification, or uninstall and reinstall the app.
